Perplexity releases "Pages," turning search results into articles
On May 30, 2024, Perplexity announced “Perplexity Pages,” a new feature that converts search and research results into a polished, well-formatted article that can be published. This marks a milestone shift from being merely a search engine that answers one-off questions, to a tool that can turn research directly into shareable content.
Details
- What it does: Automatically re-lays-out research on a given topic into an article complete with headings, images, and cited sources
- Customization: Writing style can be adjusted based on the target audience (general readers, experts, etc.), and sections can be added, removed, or reordered
- Visuals: Articles can incorporate AI-generated images, the user’s own images, or images from the web
- Intended use cases: Aimed at a wide range of users, from educators building study guides to researchers compiling findings to individuals sharing hobbyist knowledge
- How to use it: Generation starts simply by selecting “Create a Page” from the Library tab and specifying a topic and target audience, rolled out gradually to all users
What happened next
Pages became Perplexity’s first major step in expanding beyond being a “search engine” into becoming a “research and publishing platform.” This push into content and publishing accelerated from here, with Spaces (a collaboration feature) and the Publishers’ Program (media partnerships) following later that year.
