Sora's web and app offerings officially shut down — API to remain until September
On April 26, 2026, OpenAI’s Sora officially ended its web and app offerings. This carried out the shutdown plan announced in March, with a window provided for users to export content they had previously created, while the API will continue to be offered separately through September 24 of that year.
Details
- Scope of the shutdown: The Sora web and app experience, including sora.chatgpt.com, ended as of April 26, 2026
- Data export: Users can export their creations from the “sora.chatgpt.com/sunset” page. OpenAI stated that once the export period ends, all data tied to Sora usage will be completely deleted
- API shutdown delayed: The developer-facing Sora API will remain available until September 24, 2026, about four months after the web and app shutdown
- Usage trends: According to reports, Sora app downloads peaked at more than 3.3 million in November 2025 before falling to about 1.1 million by February 2026. Active users are also said to have dropped from a peak of about 1 million to under 500,000
- Notification method: OpenAI says it will individually notify users by email of the final deadline for data deletion
How to try it
- New use of Sora, on both web and app, is no longer possible
- Users who want to keep their past creations need to promptly export them from sora.chatgpt.com/sunset as instructed
- Existing integrations via the API remain usable until September 24, 2026, after which they will be shut down completely
