Visual Studio Copilot June Update Adds Usage Visibility and an MCP Trust Layer
GitHub has released the June 2026 update for GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio, focused on improving visibility, trust, and expanding functionality.
Details
- Usage monitoring: A redesigned Copilot Usage window shows real-time billing information and sends “proactive alerts” as you approach, reach, or exceed usage limits
- Security enhancement: On Visual Studio startup, MCP server configurations are validated against a trusted baseline, and any changes prompt the user for approval
- C++ modernization agent: Moves from preview to general availability (GA), supporting both automatic and guided upgrade modes for MSVC scenarios
- Expanded edit suggestions: Next-edit suggestions, previously limited to areas near the cursor, can now be shown anywhere within the active file
- Pull request integration: You can add pull requests to Copilot Chat for context-aware assistance, and review code directly within the IDE
How to try it
- Available across all subscription tiers: Free, Student, Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise
- Available immediately in Visual Studio 2026. The latest features can be accessed early through the Insiders channel
Visual Studio is a Windows-only, resource-heavy IDE, so if you’re worried about your PC’s specs, one option is to set up a remote desktop environment on a Windows VPS and run Visual Studio with Copilot there.
