Supporting ambitious external research through the Anthropic Economic Futures Research Fund

Anthropic is committing $200 million to a new Anthropic Economic Futures Research Fund, supporting external research into interventions that help society prepare for AI’s economic impact. The goal is to build an evidence base so that workers, firms, and governments have room to adapt to AI-driven change.

• Fund size: $200 million committed, with individual grants primarily ranging from $5–30 million (minimum $1 million), and flexibility to go higher for especially high-impact projects
• Five research priorities:
  • Shaping AI’s impact at the firm and workplace level: field experiments on how organizational design and worker involvement affect AI integration outcomes and the distribution of productivity gains
  • Equipping people for AI-driven transitions: evaluations of retraining programs, job placement services, sectoral transition packages, educational models, and mobility instruments like paid leave tied to reskilling
  • Modernizing income support: tests of unemployment insurance reforms, basic needs relief, and longer-duration unconditional income pilots for scenarios of persistent displacement
  • Building worker stakes in AI growth: RCTs testing pre-distributive capital accounts, pilots of equity-sharing mechanisms, and evaluations comparing different revenue-raising and distribution methods
  • Generating public investment evidence: large-scale pilots funding human and community-facing services, AI-enabled access to public services, guaranteed jobs programs, and place-based interventions in vulnerable communities
• Eligible applicants: Accredited universities, degree-granting institutions, independent research institutes, policy organizations, and nonprofits with a track record in field experiments (individuals must apply through an institution)
• Key requirement: Grantees must agree to share findings publicly at key milestones
