Mistral Raises €3 Billion in Europe's Largest-Ever Tech Series D
Mistral AI announced on September 8, 2026 that it has raised €3 billion in a Series D round, valuing the French AI lab at more than €21 billion post-money. The company says it is the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company, and the funds will go toward pushing sovereign, open-weight AI to the frontier.
Details
- Round size and valuation: €3 billion raised, pushing Mistral’s post-money valuation past €21 billion
- Lead investors: Samsung Electronics led the round, with the Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity co-leading
- New investors: Advent, BlackRock (funds and accounts it manages), and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg joined the round
- Returning investors: a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Phoenix Court’s Solar fund, and Salesforce Ventures all participated again
- Use of funds: expanding frontier research capabilities, scaling training compute and infrastructure, and accelerating commercial growth and international operations
- Current scale: Mistral says it now operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 global enterprise customers, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC
What happened next
The round cements Mistral’s position as Europe’s best-funded independent AI lab and gives it substantially more compute headroom to compete with US and Chinese frontier labs while continuing to release open-weight models. With backers now spanning a major device maker (Samsung), a sovereign fund (Luxembourg), and some of the world’s largest asset managers (BlackRock), Mistral is framing the raise as evidence that open, “sovereign” AI development can be funded at the same scale as closed, US-centric alternatives.
