GitHub Copilot Lets Members Request a Budget Increase the Moment They Hit Their Limit
GitHub made budget increase requests generally available for Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise, replacing a hard cutoff when a member runs out of AI credits with a request-and-approve flow.
Details
- The problem it fixes: previously, a member who used all their available Copilot AI credits was simply blocked from Copilot features until their budget reset
- How it works now: members can request more budget the moment they hit the limit, with requests automatically routed to the appropriate billing account based on whether the budget is organization- or enterprise-owned
- Approval flow: organization owners, enterprise owners, and billing managers review pending requests under “Requests from members” in their settings, can adjust the requested amount, and select Approve and increase to restore access immediately with the new budget
- Availability: exclusive to Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans using usage-based billing
What happened next
The change turns a hard access cutoff into a quick request-approval loop, reducing the friction of members losing Copilot access mid-task while keeping budget decisions under admin control rather than making increases automatic.
