GitHub to Deprecate Claude Opus 4.8, Opus 5, and GPT-5.6 Terra in Copilot on November 16
GitHub announced it will deprecate three models across all GitHub Copilot experiences on November 16, 2026.
Details
- Models being deprecated: Claude Opus 4.8 (individual subscribers on annual plans keep access), Claude Opus 5, and GPT-5.6 Terra
- Recommended alternatives: Claude Opus 5.5 for both deprecated Opus versions; GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna for GPT-5.6 Terra
- Action needed: update workflows and integrations to use supported models before November 16; Enterprise and Business customers get the alternatives enabled by default unless an administrator has turned off the global default or disabled the model, in which case alternatives must be enabled through model policies in Copilot settings
- No retroactive removal needed: deprecated models don’t need to be manually removed afterward; enterprise customers with concerns can contact their account team
What happened next
The deprecation continues GitHub’s regular cadence of retiring older model tiers as newer generations (Opus 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna) become Copilot’s default lineup, following a similar deprecation round in early October that retired Gemini 3.5/3.6 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code, and Claude Opus 4.7.
