OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, which it describes as a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use. It is positioned as a significant step up from GPT-5.6 Terra for everyday office and computer tasks.

Details

  • Availability: Available starting the day of the post (no specific date given) to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can use it in the API as gpt-6.1-terra.
  • Usage allowance: In ChatGPT Work and Codex, the same allowance covers more tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra, and substantially more than GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.
  • API pricing: $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens, $5 per million output tokens. Standard prices are 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
  • Computer use (Agents’ Last Exam): At medium effort, 15 percentage points above GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost, and on par with GPT-6 Astra at about one-tenth the price per token. At max effort, OpenAI says it is over 3x more token efficient than Claude Opus 5.5 at one-fourth the price per token, roughly 9x lower cost per task. It is over 3x faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
  • Other benchmarks (OpenAI-reported): Beats GPT-5.6 Terra on MMMU-Pro at every reasoning setting; surpasses GPT-5.6 Terra’s best OSWorld 2.1 score at medium effort; Terminal-Bench 4.0 at max effort 50.3% versus GPT-5.6 Terra’s published 21.5%, though GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain better for the most complex coding. On Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1 at max reasoning it surpasses GPT-6.1 Sol and is within 5 points of Opus 5.5 at under one-fifth the estimated cost.
  • Factuality: On internal error-inducing prompts, the error rate fell from 53.6% to 16.7% at low effort and by 18 points to 4.3% at max effort.
  • Safety: Meets the Critical threshold in cybersecurity under the Preparedness Framework and keeps the protections developed for GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI says it stays in scope and discloses limitations more honestly than GPT-5.6 Terra and resists prompt injection strongly. A system card is published.

What happened next

Terra is aimed at the high-volume, lower-cost end of the lineup: the pitch is Astra-level computer use at a fraction of the price rather than the best possible coding. The comparisons with Claude Opus 5.5 and others are OpenAI’s own and should await independent evaluation. GitHub Copilot added the model the same day.
