GPT-6.1 Terra now generally available in GitHub Copilot
GitHub announced that GPT-6.1 Terra, OpenAI’s newest model, is generally available in GitHub Copilot. It is designed for everyday agentic coding and terminal work at a lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol.
Details
- Performance: In early testing, it solved noticeably more terminal and C# coding tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra, and works in focused, consolidated steps on well-scoped tasks.
- Plans: Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise.
- Where to select it: The model picker in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile (iOS and Android), JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse.
- Pricing: Billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing; specific rates are not given in the post.
- Rollout: Gradual, so it may not be visible to everyone yet.
- Admin control: Business and Enterprise administrators manage access through the model policy in Copilot settings. New models are enabled automatically under default model enablement unless the global default is off or the model is explicitly disabled.
What happened next
The release landed the same day as OpenAI’s own launch of the model. Performance claims here come from GitHub’s early testing and are qualitative, with no benchmark numbers. Since billing follows provider list pricing, cost per task depends on usage-based rates documented separately.
