OpenAI introduced Images 2.6 in ChatGPT, Codex and the API. It generates images 50% faster than before, adds GIF creation, and offers finer editing controls. OpenAI says people now create 4 billion images per week across ChatGPT, Codex and the API, more than half a billion per day.

What is new

  • Speed and quality: In the API, developers choose between GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst. At low quality, Flare can generate an image in as little as six seconds and also improves layout for posters and product imagery. Sunburst targets higher quality and greater consistency across edits at medium or high quality.
  • GIFs: Create looping animations such as an animated brand mascot, reactions and memes, or animated storyboards. OpenAI notes even a simple sketch can become an animated character.
  • API editing controls: Image markup, already in ChatGPT, comes to the API so teams can pinpoint where to make changes. SVG export makes designs usable across websites, apps and print.
  • Complexity parameter: Adjusts how much planning the model does. OpenAI recommends low complexity for most edits and medium or high for scenes with many elements or constraints. Image quality separately controls detail and fidelity.

Availability

Images 2.6 is available globally in ChatGPT and Codex on all subscription tiers across desktop, mobile and web. Both models are in the API; see OpenAI’s pricing page for rates (not stated in the announcement). A system card covers safety evaluations and safeguards.
