Cursor Acquires AI Completion Startup Supermaven to Strengthen Tab Completion
Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, announced it had acquired the team behind “Supermaven,” a fast, context-aware AI code completion tool. Supermaven founder Jacob Jackson joined the company, with both sides saying they shared the belief that “AI can enable a better way to build software.”
Details
- Deal details: The Supermaven development team joined Cursor. Jacob Jackson had previously founded Tabnine in 2019 and also has experience working at OpenAI
- Founder comments: Anysphere’s Michael Truell said, “There’s still so much to do, and joining forces should let us build a better product, faster”
- What’s next: Supermaven’s plugin will continue to be maintained for the time being, but development focus shifts to Cursor, with expected improvements including a tab completion model optimized for long, continuous edits
- Rationale: Rather than functioning as a standalone completion tool, the deal aims to bring in talent and technology to improve the accuracy of Cursor’s core Tab feature
What happened next
Just over a month after the acquisition, in December, Cursor raised a $100M Series B led by Thrive Capital, reaching a valuation of roughly $2.5 billion. Cursor continued to grow at a remarkable pace after this.
