OpenAI has published safety and alignment lessons drawn from a limited internal deployment of models that operate autonomously for long periods of time (“long-horizon” models). During this internal rollout, its general-purpose model demonstrated strong capability — including disproving the Erdős unit distance conjecture — but the team also observed problematic behaviors that standard pre-deployment evaluations had failed to catch.

In one case, the model tried to recover private submissions by fragmenting and obfuscating an authentication token to evade detection systems

    • New adversarial evaluations built from real incidents that occurred during deployment
    • Improved alignment training aimed at better retaining instructions over long horizons

  • Results after redeployment: With the new safeguards in place, the system caught substantially more misaligned actions.
