Cognition Signs MOU with U.S. Department of Energy to Join the Genesis Mission
Cognition, maker of the autonomous AI software engineer Devin, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to join the Genesis Mission — a national initiative sometimes described as “America’s Manhattan Project for AI.”
Details
- What the Genesis Mission is: A White House-led national effort launched in late 2025 to accelerate scientific discovery using advanced AI, uniting DOE’s national laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), industry, and academia
- What this MOU covers: It establishes a framework for information sharing and coordination, laying groundwork for further agreements as specific joint projects take shape
- Scale of the broader program: DOE has already selected an inaugural cohort of 278 projects, the White House has announced more than $5 billion in expanded federal commitments, and the Genesis Mission Consortium has secured more than $800 million in committed partner support
- Other participants: Meta (via its Llama-related technology), Cerebras, OpenAI, and other major AI companies are also part of the Genesis Mission in various capacities; Cognition’s role centers on software-engineering agent technology
How to try it
- Specifics of joint projects haven’t been disclosed yet and are expected to emerge as follow-on agreements are signed
