ChatGPT for Teachers Expands to 55 More U.S. School Districts
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT for Teachers to 55 additional U.S. school systems across 20 states, bringing its total footprint to more than 100 K-12 organizations in 30 states and free access for over 300,000 educators and staff — including roughly one in five of America’s 20 largest public school districts.
Details
- Free through June 2028: verified U.S. K-12 educators get ChatGPT for Teachers at no cost, paired with a dedicated K-12 Educator plugin for lesson planning, adapting materials, and building classroom resources
- Training infrastructure: OpenAI Academy training programs and “AI Skills Jams” (1,600+ teachers participated this summer) back the rollout, alongside a 5-year National Academy for AI Instruction partnership with the American Federation of Teachers targeting 400,000 educators
- Privacy commitments: a 16-state National Data Privacy Agreement through the Student Data Privacy Consortium underpins the program, and data in ChatGPT for Teachers workspaces is not used for model training by default
- Usage so far: from January to July 2026, educators sent 1.9 million messages — 900,000 related to report cards/progress reports, 800,000 for lesson planning, and 100,000+ each for substitute plans and evaluation materials
- Reported outcomes: OpenAI says 93% of Skills Jam participants left with resources they could apply directly, and 96% planned to use what they learned within 30 days
What happened next
The district expansion continues OpenAI’s push to make ChatGPT for Teachers a standard tool in U.S. public education rather than a pilot program, with the privacy agreement and educator-training infrastructure aimed at addressing the two biggest points of friction — data handling and teacher readiness — as adoption scales into more states.
