GitHub Copilot Deprecates Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Opus/Sonnet 4.5/4.6, and Raptor Mini
GitHub deprecated a batch of older models from GitHub Copilot effective September 1, 2026, removing them from Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions.
Details
- Deprecated models: Gemini 3.1 Pro; Claude Opus 4.5 and 4.6; Claude Sonnet 4.5 and 4.6; and Raptor Mini
- Recommended replacements: Gemini 3.1 Pro users should move to Gemini 3.7 Flash; Claude Opus 4.5/4.6 users to Claude Opus 4.7, 4.8, or 5; Claude Sonnet 4.5/4.6 users to Claude Sonnet 5; and Raptor Mini users to MAI-Code-1.1-Flash
- Admin action needed: enterprise administrators must enable access to the alternative models through their organization’s model policies in Copilot settings and confirm they appear in the model selector
- No manual cleanup required: the deprecated models are removed automatically; no action is needed to take them away from end users
What happened next
The deprecation continues GitHub’s routine model-lifecycle management as newer versions from Anthropic and Google supersede older ones, timed the day after Claude Fable 5.1 reached general availability in Copilot — reinforcing that GitHub expects users to migrate to current-generation models rather than staying on now-superseded releases.
