Gemini Becomes a Cross-App Orchestrator Across Google Workspace
Google announced on September 9, 2026 that Gemini now works as an intelligent orchestrator across Google Workspace, letting people generate documents, research across files, draft and send emails, schedule meetings, and set task reminders — all from wherever they happen to be typing, without switching apps.
Details
- Powered by Workspace Intelligence: Gemini uses this underlying layer to carry out complex, multi-step tasks behind the scenes while the user stays in their current app
- Where you can ask: the Gmail side panel, “Ask Gemini” in Chat and Drive, the Docs and Slides side panels, plus Sheets, Tasks, and Calendar
- What it can produce: formatted Google Docs, structured Sheets, and stylized Slides generated directly from a Gemini prompt in another app
- Rollout timing: a gradual rollout across both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains began September 2, 2026, with visibility taking up to 15 days to reach all users
- Who gets it: Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra consumer subscribers, Frontline Plus (scheduling only), and Google AI Pro for Education
What happened next
The feature is rolling out now and should be visible to eligible users within about two weeks of the September 2 start date. It extends Google’s push, seen throughout early September, to fold Gemini more deeply into everyday Workspace surfaces rather than confining it to a standalone chat window — following closely on other September updates like context-aware access controls for Gemini Enterprise and expanded custom instructions support.
