Anthropic expands AI for Science to foundations and research institutions
Anthropic expanded its AI for Science program, which gives free Claude credits to researchers on high-impact projects, to a group of 20 foundations, institutions and research groups worldwide.
Details
- Program: Launched in May 2025; Anthropic says it has supported hundreds of projects across biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, climate science and mathematics.
- Funders and societies (credits to distribute): Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Simons Foundation, Schmidt Sciences, Open Source for Science Fund (Renaissance Philanthropy), US National Science Foundation, and CAS (American Chemical Society).
- Institutions (credits used internally): Space Telescope Science Institute, Wellcome Sanger Institute, Francis Crick Institute, Imperial College London Department of Life Sciences, EMBL and Gladstone Institutes.
- Initiatives (direct credits): FlyWire, LEAP, AstroPath, gnomAD, Tau Ceti (Lean math library), and the Centre for Population Genomics in Australia.
- Earlier partners: HHMI Janelia developed the Model Hardware Standard for AI agents operating lab instruments (research preview); the Allen Institute is building agent teams for its open datasets.
- Other: A discounted Team plan for scientists launched in the months before. Credit amounts are undisclosed.
What happened next
The change is about distribution: funders and institutes now hand out credits themselves. Anthropic says many collaborations are early-stage, plans to report on impact and hopes to add partners worldwide.
