Microsoft Copilot for finance adds 25+ finance skills and partner plugins
Microsoft announced Microsoft Copilot for finance, an expansion adding more than 25 new finance skills and partner-built plugins across Microsoft Copilot, aimed at accounting, capital markets, and broader finance work. It builds on finance skills introduced in Copilot in Excel in June 2026.
Details
- Accounting capabilities: Available in Frontier for Copilot in Excel and Cowork. They cover reconciling accounts, drafting journal entries (accruals, reclassifications, allocations, reversals, recurring entries) with balance checks, and performance-versus-plan reporting. Further capabilities span audit, tax, FP&A, compliance, and training. In Excel, users can optionally start an audit trail that records in chat history what Copilot changed and why.
- Capital Markets plugin for Cowork: Delegates multistep workflows such as preparing an investment case or testing an acquisition thesis with trading comparables and an LBO model, with sourced inputs kept distinct from analyst assumptions. Also covers three-statement modeling, DCF, merger modeling, CIM review, earnings notes, and investment committee memos.
- Finance plugin for Cowork: Handles work across files and conversations, such as close review packages and forecast reviews carried through to leadership briefs.
- Data connections: A Dynamics 365 ERP apps plugin brings finance and operations data into Copilot, and Fabric IQ makes governed Fabric data (starting with Power BI reports and semantic models) usable. Partner plugins include Intuit QuickBooks, Xero, Zoho Books, FactSet, Morningstar, LSEG, S&P Global, Moody’s, and Mercury, among others. Third-party services may need separate licensing or admin enablement.
- Usage claim: Microsoft says that in seven days of limited Insiders availability, more than 8,000 unique users invoked accounting skills over 44,000 times across more than 18,000 conversations. This is a vendor figure.
- Pricing and general availability dates: undisclosed in the post.
What happened next
The release shows Microsoft packaging Copilot by profession, using plugins and Cowork to move from single-file assistance in Excel to delegated multistep deliverables. The optional audit trail and the separation of sourced inputs from assumptions respond to finance review requirements. Wider availability beyond Frontier and partner licensing terms remain to be seen.
